Andy Irvine

Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers, known for his soulful voice that embodies the spirit of Ireland. Celebrated as "a tradition in himself," Andy's career spans over 50 years as a musician, singer, and songwriter. Starting with Sweeney's Men in the mid-60s, he achieved success with Planxty in the 70s, collaborated with Paul Brady, and was involved with groups like Patrick Street, Mozaik, LAPD, and Usher's Island.

As a solo artist, Andy epitomises the archetypal troubadour, influenced by Woody Guthrie. The Irish Times noted he is "often copied, never equalled." His music includes Irish traditional songs, Balkan dances, and his own compositions. After travelling and absorbing Balkan music traditions, he returned to Ireland in 1970 to form Planxty with Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, and Liam O'Flynn.

Andy's solo albums include "Rainy Sundays…Windy Dreams," "Rude Awakening," "East Wind," "Rain on the Roof," and "Way Out Yonder." He formed Mozaik in 2002, and they released two albums and toured globally. In 2004, Planxty reunited to great acclaim, performing sold-out shows.

In 2008, Celtic Connections Festival featured a special reunion of Andy Irvine & Paul Brady. Andy continued to perform and collaborate with various artists, including forming Usher's Island in 2012. He celebrated his 70th birthday with a concert in Dublin, featuring several of his bands.

Andy's recent work includes the album "Precious Heroes" recorded with Luke Plumb in 2016. He continues to perform worldwide, maintaining a vibrant solo career and contributing to the finest Irish bands.
