Exploring Egg Tempera Painting - 3 day course
Landmark Arts Centre, Ferry Road, Teddington
Arts & Crafts
UNTIL Tuesday 27th August
Suitable for all, no previous experience required. Discover how to use the ancient medium of egg tempera for your contemporary painting practice. This 3-day course will introduce the materials and methods unique to traditional egg tempera panel painting and explain its many possibilities. From building core technical skills in binding and mixing the natural earth and mineral pigments with egg yolk to understanding the overall sequential panel painting process, participants will learn how to use this very different medium for their own painting pursuits. By exploring a range of specialist painting techniques and application processes, participants will then work on a small project of their own choosing, with individual technical guidance and support provided. Whilst the quick-drying nature of egg tempera and the need to apply layers of paint to visually blend colour make it particularly suitable for botanical and figurative illustration, small landscapes, still life painting as well as portraiture and icon painting, other approaches are welcomed and encouraged!
Skills Developed:
- Identifying pigments and understanding their different characteristics
- Mixing egg yolk binder
- Mixing and using colour
- Traditional egg tempera painting techniques
Materials Provided: A range of pigments, brushes and painting equipment will be supplied. If possible, participants should bring their own brushes and any specialist equipment and mediums. Pre-gessoed boards in several sizes will be available to buy at affordable prices ranging from £20-25.
Materials Required: If preferred, students may bring Ampersand 'clay boards' which are also suitable for egg tempera and maybe cheaper. Please do not bring boards prepared with shop-bought acrylic 'gesso' primer – or canvases. These grounds are unsuitable for egg tempera. Depending on their choice of project, participants are welcome to supply their own additional kit and materials as required.
