Teddington Theatre Club to stage 'relaxed' and inclusive performance of Treasure Island
Teddington Theatre Club (TCC) is staging a 'relaxed' performance of Treasure Island for an inclusive experience for those who may find the theatre unsettling.
Showing at 2pm on Sunday 29 October, the same story is presented but with a "laid-back" approach: allowing audience members to leave their seat, make noise and move around as they wish.
A statement from TTC said: "Relaxed performances offer a way to reach new audiences and thinks about equality of experience.
"One in five people in the UK identifies as disabled so there's a strong case for taking all reasonable steps to nurture improved accessibility to our productions."
Redesigning elements of the show, TTC aim to make the theatre a more relaxed and accommodating environment for individuals who may find it unsettling.
Theatre lighting is dimmed -not dark- throughout, loud noises or special effects may be toned down and someone will talk briefly before the show starts to pout everyone at ease.
There will also be additional ushers around to help, and a chill out space will be available if someone needs to take a break from the show.
A visual/social story is made available in advance (online), to help familiarise individuals to the Hampton Hill Theatre venue and the actual production.
Although open to everyone, the shows are catered for those who find the theatre stressful or confusing. It provides the chance for people to know what to expect.
For example, this may be people experiencing autistic spectrum conditions, learning difficulties, sensory and communication difficulties or dementia.
