We are in store for a very windy Tuesday, folks, as Storm Francis sweeps the country.

The winds in Teddington will pick up dramatically after 1pm tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25).

Speeds will jump from 18mph to gusts of 41mph by 2pm and 44mph by 3pm.

A yellow weather warning covering Greater London has been issued by the Met Office.

It runs between 9am tomorrow and the same time on Wednesday, August 26 and means residents should "be aware" of the possibility of extreme weather.

"Storm Francis will bring some very strong winds leading to disruption to travel and power supplies along with potential damage to trees," the forecaster said.

It warns of:

  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
  • Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

The winds forecast in Teddington are considerably stronger than those predicted in nearby Richmond.

Exposed western parts of the UK will be the worst hit, with wind speeds of up to 70mph.

Rain is expected to be heaviest in Northern Ireland and south west Scotland where 60-90mm could fall as the storm moves from west to east.

Chief meteorologist Andy Page said: "The UK is in for another unseasonably wet and windy spell with Storm Francis arriving on Tuesday.

"There will be strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the west of the UK.

"A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these warnings can be updated regularly so please keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecast."
