Teddington: MP fights to stop sale of police station

Teddington's MP Munira Wilson has stepped up her campaign against the closure and sale of Teddington Police station.

She has written a hard-hitting letter to Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, urging her to reconsider.

The Liberal Democrat MP said: "The site should be used to get more police on to our streets, not sold to the highest bidder to build luxury flats."

Her letter highlights the "implications the decision will have on crime in the local area."

This includes concerns about teenagers gathering at Teddington Lock during the good weather.

She pointed out that the decision comes three months after a teenager was stabbed at the Lock.

The MP cited 70 incidents of crime in Teddington over July this year, with theft and violence against the person being the most common.

She added: "I believe a more visible police presence, including an operational police station, with a front counter in the area would be beneficial."

Her full letter can be read in the photo gallery above.

Teddington residents are split on the issue of the police station.

Some are concerned about the loss of a local police presence and the prospect of more development in the town centre.

Others, however, say the station is an eyesore and selling it off could help fund better policing.
