Struggling organic supermarket Planet Organic has been forced to close its Teddington branch today, after just two months of operating on Broad Street.
Despite the chain opening its 14th store on 60-62 Broad Street in February this year, which previously belonged to Johnson's Shoes, residents were left disappointed to see a flyer appear in the window today (Tuesday) announcing the sudden closure.
In a very brief statement, it read: "This store is now closed, the store management and staff thank you for your custom."
Today's news follows the announcement Planet Organic founder Renée Elliot, alongside her husband Brian Elliot, had fought back the chain from administrators Interpath, in a deal also announced today.
Through Ms Elliots consortium, the couple will buy 10 Planet Organic shops keeping the chain alive and protecting 194 store jobs as well as a further 71 at the company's head office.
Interpath director Gareth Slater said: "After a competitive process, we're delighted to have concluded this transaction which will see the Planet Organic name continue to trade and, importantly, protects a large number of jobs.
"We know that the new owners have exciting plans for the business and we wish them the very best for the future and look forward to seeing the business go from strength to strength."
However, the Teddington store is one of four branches which are not included in the transaction and will close alongside two London sites in Bermondsey and on Tottenham Court Road, and in Henley-on Thames. A total of 64 staff are set to be laid off.
Like many retailers, Planet Organic's recent performance has been hampered by the pandemic and reduced shopping footfall.
It is understood the business has been loss-making in each of the last two financial years.
