Open day at Teddington's historic Bushy House at the National Physical Laboratory

By Stuart Higgins 1st Sep 2022

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will be opening Bushy House in Teddington to the public as part of Open House London 2022 and Heritage Open Days which invites communities to experience local history, architecture and culture.

On Sunday 18 September between 10am and 4:30pm, NPL is offering visitors a chance to explore the history and scientific significance of the Grade II listed former royal residence.

Visitors will have the opportunity to discover various parts of the original home of NPL and explore its historic and important research over the last 122 years.

In the grounds, visitors will also be able to explore the gardens and descendant of the apple tree said to have inspired Sir Isaac Newton's theory of gravity.

Many of Britain's most renowned scientists have worked at NPL and made significant contributions to our scientific achievements, including codebreaker Alan Turing, who lived in Hampton Hill, Louis Essen and Donald Davis.

It is also famously the birthplace of Turing's ACE computer, the first universal computer of its kind; packet switching, the basis of the internet; and atomic time, the backbone of today's GPS and global communications.

Access to parts of the ground floor of Bushy House, which feature historic photographs and artefacts, will provide an opportunity to learn more about the previous occupants and the science conducted at Bushy House.

In NPL's historical museum, visitors will be able to explore over a century's worth of cutting-edge research and view our historic artefacts on display. For those who want to see science in action, the ever-popular liquid nitrogen show will be running throughout the day.

The NPL has been at the forefront of scientific research which helped tackle the COVID pandemic as well developing more effective cancer treatments and advanced and faster communication technologies.
