Meet the Tokyo 2020 Olympians who trained on Teddington's doorstep

St Mary's University in Strawberry Hill, near Teddington's boundary, has been the training ground for many international sporting stars over the years.

These include local resident and Team GB gold-medallist Sir Mo Farah , former England cricketer Monty Panesar and team GB flag-bearer Moe Sbihi .

And the pattern has repeated at this year's Tokyo 2020 Olympics as an incredible 10 of the university's alumni are competing, many of them in the Team GB squad.

So without further delay let's meet our local Olympians :

Rowers

  1. Matilda Horn

Matilda studied Sports Rehabilitation at the University and graduated in 2015.

She was the assistant coach of the U23s Women's four and eight at World Rowing Champions 2016 prior to coxing the Women's eight at the World Rowing cups Two and Three in 2017 to earn Bronze and Silver medals respectively.

Tokyo 2020 is Matilda's first Olympic Games and she will be Cox of the Women's Eight.

  1. Karen Bennett

Karen is also a Sports Rehabilitation graduate.

She won Silver in the Women's Eight at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and will competing in the Women's Four in Tokyo.

  1. Moe Sbihi MBE

Moe studied Sport Science with Health, Nutrition and Exercise at St Mary's.

He will be competing at his third Olympic Games this year, having won Bronze in the Men's Coxed Eight at London 2012 and Gold in the Men's Four at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Moe, who grew up across the river in Surbiton, was also one of the Team GB Flag Bearers for the opening ceremony, the first British Muslim to do so.

Rugby players

  1. Emma Uren

Emma studied Strength and Conditioning at St Mary's and graduated in 2020.

In 2018, she captained her team to their first victory against France at the U20s Championships and this year she will make her Olympic debut in the Women Rugby Sevens squad in Tokyo.

  1. Abi Burton

Abi is a current student at St Mary's studying Sport Science.

She will be joining alumna Emma Uren in Tokyo as a member the Women's Rugby Sevens squad to make her Olympic debut.

Runners and cyclists

  1. Revee Walcott-Nolan

Revee is a middle-distance runner who studied Sport Science at St Mary's and graduated in 2016.

She won the Women's 1500m at the British Championships and will make her Olympic debut in the Women's 1500m in Tokyo.

  1. Elliot Giles

Elliot studied Physical and Sport Education at St Mary's and graduated in 2017.

He won bronze in the 800m at the European Championships in 2016 and broke the British indoor 800m record in 2021.

Tokyo will be Elliot's second Olympic Games having first competed in the Men's 800m in Rio in 2016.

  1. Steph Twell

Steph studied Strength and Conditioning at St Mary's.

She will be competing in the marathon at her third Olympic games, having made her debut at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 where she competed in the Women's 1500m.

She was also selected for the Rio Games in 2016, where she competed in the Women's 5000m.

  1. Anna Møller

Anna, who represents Denmark, is an Endurance Performance Centre alumna who studied Sport Science at St Mary's.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be her second games, having competed in the 3000m Steeplechase at Rio 2016.

  1. Corrine Hall MBE

Corrine studied Sport Science at the university.

She will be competing at The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games, which will be her second games.

Corrine won gold and bronze medals as a pilot for Lora Turnham in the Tandem Cycling 3000m Individual Pursuit B and the 30km Time Trial B respectively.
