Derby games rarely disappoint for players and spectators alike and Saturday's game against Wimbledon was no exception. Zoe Cronin reports on Teddington Ladies 1s 4-2 win against Wimbledon.
It was evenly matched from the first whistle, but it was Teddington who took the lead with an early goal from Olivia D'Castro. Wimbledon were quick to hit back with a goal and the clear signal that the pace of the game was only going up.
With little to separate the two teams however, it was Wimbledon who managed to catch Teddington on the counter and finished efficiently to pull ahead and into a 2-1 lead.
Back fought Teddington levelling the score with a well-worked penalty corner and a precision perfect strike from Kate Woolridge, shortly before half-time.
Teddington started the second half well and were soon rewarded. A quick ball out of defence worked its way smoothly through the midfield and found Mariana Garcia Moritan. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Mariana scored a spectacular shot matched only by the celebrations on and off the pitch.
Wimbledon would not lie down and kept pressing with a rocket of a cross leading to a very near miss at Teddington's back post. As the game intensified and the clock ticked down, Wimbledon were transferring the ball well, looking for space through the press, but the Teddington defence stood its ground and worked hard together to break down play and repel a stream of attacks.
Late into the second-half, Teddington got a well-deserved fourth goal with a transfer from left to right and a quick shot into the D. It was Riley Flecker-Lister who latched onto it first and managed to tip it past the keeper.
The battle ensued right up to the final whistle, but it was a well-earned win for Teddington keeping the pressure on at the top of the table. With excellent performances across the board, player of the match went to Mariana Moritan.
