This week saw Teddington Men's 1s take on Clifton Robinsons in the England Hockey Tier 1 Cup quarter final. A brand-new opposition and a bit of an unknown quantity, Teddington decided to open the match up by testing them and pressing high from the front. Charlie Ball reports on the cup clash.

And they got their rewards within minutes of the push-back when Daly was able to steal the ball off the centre back, offload to Greaves who then glided past three defenders to rocket the ball past the keeper on his inside post.

The lead however was only to last for a minute after conceding a short corner which Clifton dispatched with aplomb.

The Teddies then worked hard to wrench back control of the possession and with coach Ben Edwards' stern words ringing in their ears, Matt Mitcham aroused the bench with a dynamic lunge in front of the Clifton centre forward. This moment set the tempo for what was to come - calling for much more aggression from the home team.

Pace and pressure then began to tell with a rapid run of classy flicks from the top of the D bringing goals for Matt Daly and Elliott Smith, but the Teddies were still missing the clinical finish in open play.

The second half brought much more joy with goals from Matt Steventon and Daly and another classy top right flick from Smith. And then a very special moment as youngster Theo Wood, in his first season in the Men's 1s slotted his first goal much to the pleasure of his teammates and the lively home support.

7-1 earned a well deserved place in the semi-final of the cup.
