WHSmith considers selling high street stores, but Teddington not on the list
WHSmith is considering selling some of its high street stores as part of a strategic review, but the one in Teddington is not included
In a statement on Saturday 25 January, the British retailer said it is "exploring potential strategic options for this profitable and cash-generative part of the group, including a possible sale."
The move signals a potential shift away from the chain's historic roots on the high street, as WHSmith focuses increasingly on its global travel retail business.
Over the past decade, the company has transformed into what it calls "a focused global travel retailer," now operating over 1,200 stores across 32 countries in locations such as airports, train stations, and hospitals.
This travel arm now accounts for more than 85 per cent of WH Smith's profits, with its high street business making up the remainder.
The announcement comes as high street retailers face ongoing economic challenges and years of declining consumer sentiment.
Locally, WHSmith is located in 66 Broad Street, and it appears that this store is safe for now, with Orpington being the only London store currently announced to be closing.
Currently, WHSmith operates around 500 high street stores, employing roughly 5,000 staff members.
