Short Story Writing at United Response, Field Lane

Whether you're an absolute beginner or seasoned writer, this fun interactive workshop is designed to help you connect with and liberate your writing voice.

In the latest of Handmade Creative Workshops' creative writing offering, the focus will be on the art of writing short stories. You will be guided through a variety of practical and imaginative exercises and given the opportunity to write, share (if you would like to) and encourage one another.

The class will be taught by experienced and popular writing teacher, Janette Simpson (pictured below), who has led many creative writing workshops with both adults and children. Participant numbers are kept deliberately low (maximum 8) to ensure that everyone has plenty of opportunities to contribute and to ask questions.

Lots of tea, coffee and homemade cake will be included!

Embroidery For Beginners at United Response

It's a busy week for United Response and Handmade Creative Workshops as they play host to two wonderful events this week.

During their second workshop of the day, expert stitcher Katherine Savage will introduce you to a range of fabulous beginner to intermediate hand embroidery stitches. Starting with the easier stitches, you'll build up to the trickier ones as your confidence grows. Stitches covered will include back stitch, whipped back stitch, fly stitch, lazy daisy, couching, stem stitch, picot stitch, satin stitch and French knots.

You'll be given a sewing kit with everything needed to complete your embroidered hoop. The kit includes a booklet of instructions on each of the stitches as well, so that you can continue stitching at home. There'll be a choice of a dragonfly or butterfly design for you to work on.

The class is suitable for both complete beginners and those with a little experience of hand sewing.

Sunday, October 16

Sue Barker at Kingston's Rose Theatre

Tennis and broadcasting legend Sue Barker will grace Kingston's Rose Theatre this Sunday as she shares the remarkable story of her life and career.

The evening will celebrate the publication of her all in, once-only autobiography, Calling the Shots, which audience members will receive as part of their ticket package.

From her former tennis career as Britain's No 1 and world No 3, to her glittering four decades on camera as an award-winning broadcaster, it promises to be a special night at the Rose.

There will be opportunities for members of the audience to ask Sue their own questions during a Q & A segment with the running time expected to be between 75 – 90 minutes with no interval.
