The leader of our council Cllr Gareth Roberts said residents "must stay at home" over the 27-day lockdown when it begins tomorrow.

He was speaking in a video address to the borough which you can watch above.

The Lib Dem councillor for Hampton explained which key services will be affected by the nationwide lockdown.

Transcript

Hello, on Thursday the whole of England will go into lockdown and the message from central government is clear: you must stay at home.

There are exceptions to this rule for when you may leave your house. These include taking moderate exercise, going to school or a similar educational setting, going to work if you cannot work from home, going out to buy food or other essential items, seeking medical care or going to visit somebody with whom you share a support bubble.

If the sacrifice of this new lockdown is to work, then we need to follow this very simple rule to stay at home.

We now know that when London was put into the higher tier just two weeks ago the limits on social interaction had a beneficial effect in slowing the spread of the virus. Therefore there is a big prize to be won if we can make this lockdown work.

As a council we are going to keep things running as normally as possible, so we are not envisaging any changes to your bins or waste collections. The Townmead waste tip will stay open.

But we will be closing our leisure centres and pools and we are still taking advice as to what our library service will look like.

This is going to be a difficult time for everybody and therefore we're going to make sure that we are looking to reopen our community hub so that those people who need help can get help, and we'll be working with our voluntary sector partners to ensure that they have got the tools that they need to help deliver services to local residents who need their assistance.

This will be difficult for us all. However, we know that this type of lockdown can work, so in order to make it work please follow the very simple rule: stay at home and save lives. Thank you.
