Teddington's main recycling centre has been temporarily closed due to damage from a massive fire last night.

Townmead Road Re-use and Recycling Centre , the main refuse station for Richmond borough, is now closed 'until further notice' after a huge blaze broke out at 8.43pm on Sunday 20 June.

100 tonnes of waste were engulfed by the fire and it took 10 fire brigades and 70 firefighters almost 3 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Fire crews from Heston, Chiswick, Hammersmith and Wandsworth were all at the scene, which was captured in dramatic photos released by the London Fire Brigade .

Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night to dampen down the area.

Richmond Council said in an update today: "Due to a major fire last night, the Townmead Road Re-use and Recycling Centre will be closed until further notice.

"Anyone with a booking will be contacted about rescheduling."

Residents in the area have been advised to continue to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke.

The London Fire Brigade is now investigating the cause of the fire.
