Teddington RNLI issue river safety reminder following the return of three children feared missing in a kayak near Eel Pie Island
Story by Eli Haidari.
Teddington's lifeboat station has issued a river safety reminder following a callout earlier this week after three children were feared missing in a kayak near Eel Pie Island in Twickenham.
The Teddington base is one of four RNLI stations on the River Thames and is also one of the busiest in the UK for callouts.
Following yesterday's incident, the team took to Twitter to remind members of the public of the danger's the Thames possesses.
They said: "Volunteer crew launched at 3.23pm yesterday to search for 3 missing children in a kayak near Eel Pie Island. All found safe and well. Please remember to have a means to call for help if out on the water."
As well as the river being full of debris, there can be incredibly strong currents and river traffic. Risk of cold-water-shock is also a danger as the Thames remains very cool regardless of warmer temperatures.
Over the summer in July, 14-year-old Brian Sasu tragically died after getting into difficulty in the Thames at Taggs Island. His passing was followed by pleas from across the capital urging people to remember the dangers open waters carry, and the devastating circumstances they can cause to families and friends.
