Camera equipment that belonged to British adventurer and ground-breaking filmmaker Tom Stobart to feature at Teddington auction that could sell for £20,000
Camera equipment once belonging to the British adventurer and ground-breaking filmmaker, Tom Stobart, is set to feature at a Teddington auction this Saturday (October 29).
Thomas Ralph Stobart was a British cameraman, film-maker and author, famous for having shot The Conquest of Everest, the official film of the 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition which went on to win four Oscar's in 1954.
In addition to his filming of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, Stobart made army instructional films during World War II, went on a 1946 expedition to the Himalayas and made the official film for the 1949-50 Norwegian-British-Sweden Antarctic Expedition.
Alongside the archive of camera equipment that belonged to the British explorer and filmmaker, a host of other remarkable items will be listed as a complete bundle which is estimated to sell for a maximum of £20,000.
Among the items is an original food package from the 1953 Mount Everest Expedition, signed by John Hunt and Tenzing Norgay, who were the two men to successfully reach the summit.
An official programme for the 'first performance' of The Conquest of Everest, in the gracious presence of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh', with Thomas Stobart listed in the credits as the filmmaker, plus loosely inserted tickets for the first performance, will also be included.
In 1954, Stobart embarked on an expedition to find the 'Abomonable Snowman' - a mythical monster resembling a large, hairy, apelike being that supposed to inhabit the Himalayas. A pickaxe used by Stobart during the Tibetan Hunt will also be listed for sale.
Sunday's auction will take place at Teddington's Normansfield Theatre, to view the full catalogue for this weekend's event, visit the link here.
