The Teddington Society has expressed concern over part of Richmond Council's new Local Plan which could see 'six-storey' buildings approved, potentially putting local businesses at risk.

The Local Plan sets out the council's planning policy for the borough of Richmond upon Thames. It will be used to guide future decisions on planning applications and development in the area.

Now in its final draft stage, key sites with development potential have been identified in the plan. There is an "identified opportunity" for mid-rise buildings in the area along the railway line north of Teddington Station, across the junction of Station Road/High Street.

The area identified includes what is currently occupied by Teddington Garden Centre, the business park on Station Road, the top of Park Road, and both sides of the railway bridge.

In the plan, Richmond Council says its strategy is to "conserve and enhance the town centre's character and function". This includes the protection of green space and the provision of spaces for local businesses.

However, in a statement, The Teddington Society's Planning Group said it was concerned about "the specific designation of this area as a mid-rise zone".

"A line of buildings at this height would change the character of the town - it would not conserve or enhance it," a spokesperson said.

"Our view is that any new planning application should be considered on its merits and that there should not be a presumption that any building of up to six storeys is permitted."

The potential loss of Teddington Business Park, which provides office and industrial space, is a cause for concern. It is said to be a valuable and well-designed asset to the town.

Residents fear there could also be a significant impact on the views from residential streets near the station.

For more information on the Local Plan, visit the Richmond Council website. To comment on the plan, visit the consultation portal or contact the council via email. All comments must be made by Monday 24 July.
