Yesterday we asked you: "True or false: Teddington's name comes from 'Tide-End town' as its Lock marks the last tidal stretch of the Thames." Today we can reveal the answer is...FALSE. The 'Tide-End town' explanation is an urban myth. There's no evidence for it other than a poem by Rudyard Kipling - and it couldn't be right as Teddington dates back a lot earlier than its lock! Instead, the name likely comes from a Saxon chief called 'Tuda' with the suffix 'ingtun' meaning enclosure or group of people. Records showing 'Tudintun' date back to 969AD - meaning Teddington pre-dates the Norman Conquest of England. You can learn more about this here. Come back for more trivia next Tuesday!
