IT'S a long way from Detroit but the magical music of Motown legend Stevie Wonder was brought to life last weekend with an amazing night at Hampton School's fantastic venue, The Hammond Theatre.
A packed house was up and rocking in the aisles for singer Noel McCalla and the Derek Nash Band for the gig called 'Some Kinda Wonderful' which featured classic numbers like Isn't She Lovely, Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing, You are The Sunshine of My Life, My Cherie Amour, Superstition and For Once in My Life.
The six piece band – supported by three West End backing singers and a mesmerising duo of trumpet and trombone players – does not want to be seen as a Tribute band and offers up its own musical interpretations of some of Stevie Wonder's lesser-known works.
Band leader, Derek Nash gives a saxophonist masterclass and expertly guides the audience through Stevie's earliest hits such as Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours from 1970 when he was just 20 years old. He was the youngest ever artist to sign with the Motown label at the age of 11.
The band will be embarking upon a nationwide tour soon and if you are feeling a little low or down in the dumps, this night out is just what the doctor ordered. (A totally unbiased view from a Stevie Wonder fan!)
The concert is one of several to support the centenary of Hampton Pool this year and future gigs include Caravan and The Illegal Eagles.
The open air series of concerts at Hampton Pool will be announced later in the year.
