Nearly half of coronavirus tests at Twickenham test centre used a Scottish postcode

Approximately 45% of all those who were tested for coronavirus at Twickenham testing centre last week arrived without an appointment and were told to book one in Scotland, a worker has confirmed.

Appointments for the test centre at the rugby stadium are hard to come by and many people have been showing up without one.

A worker at the testing centre who does not want to be named told Nub News: "People just get angry at us, as if we make the rules. We were told not to let anyone through without an appointment, it's not our fault."

That same worker however also said that once they turn those people away, they tell them to book using an alternative postcode, either Aberdeen (AB1 7PW) or Inverness (IV1 1AA).

"Once they book an appointment in Scotland, all they need to get into the centre is a QR code, the location of where they booked isn't visible", added the employee.

Out of approximately 3,200 people that were tested last week, around 1,400 of those were originally turned away and told to come back after booking with a Scottish postcode.

Although the government addressed this issue during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday and assured Scottish politicians that they would rectify this, this has clearly not yet been the case.

There are also rumours circulating that tests conducted at Twickenham, on people with Scottish QR codes, might get thrown out in a bid to stop people using the loophole in the system, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Holyrood argues that by allowing people in London to use Scottish postcodes in order to get an appointment, this will give the false impression that a higher number of people in Scotland are developing symptoms, which could lead to tighter restrictions.

Twickenham testing centre is due to close at the end of this month, with centres in Heathrow and Chessington now the nearest local options.
