Historic Hampton pub is saved
By Tilly O'Brien 16th Jun 2026
An historic pub in Hamppton, which has been shut since its former landlord died in 2024, has now been bought.
The Railway Bell, affectionately known as The Dip, has been bought by an unknown businessman.
The future of the pub, which dates back to the 19th century, has been hanging in the balance after popular landlord Seamus O'Kane died in April 2024.
Owner Stonegate Group, which runs more than 4,500 venues in the UK, put the pub on the market for £1m with estate agents Savills last year.
Since its closure, locals, led by Robert Lee, have been rallying to save the pub by launching a campaign group called 'Save the Dip' in the hope of raising funds to buy the pub from Stonegate.
According to CAMRA's Richmond and Hounslow branch, "contracts have been exchanged for the sale of the pub".
CAMRA said: "Stonegate have not disclosed to whom. On completion, the buyer is granting a new lease for pub use.
"There are plans to undertake refurbishment with the aim of reopening the pub soon, however, no reopening date has been stated.
Although an ACV is in place, suspicions have been raised that although Save The Dip Campaign should have first refusal their solicitor posits that the sale is exempt because the pub is being sold as a going concern.
"Robert Lee has stated the campaign group has decided not to contest the solicitor's view as raising funds to put in a bid would take time and letting the sale take its course will hopefully lead to a more speedy reopening of the pub."
Speaking about the recent purchase of the pub, Robert Lee told Nub News: "I can confirm that the pub has been bought by a local businessman who is currently renovating the property.
"It is expected to reopen in the coming weeks and I'm sure the whole community looks forward to welcoming it back."
