High Street yarn bombing part of RNLI fundraising effort
A postbox has been the target of a colourful, lifeboat-themed yarn bomb down Teddington's High Street.
A tweet from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Teddington station credits the work to local resident Helen, who has previously created a similar Christmas-themed postbox topper.
An orange vessel crewed by an RNLI teddy bear is depicted being approached by a friendly seal – most likely a reference to the numerous cases of their real-life counterparts reaching Teddington Lock via the Thames.
The yarn bomb almost coincides with the one-year anniversary of a more upbeat encounter (20 January 2023) between a "special guest," nicknamed Sammy, and a local RNLI crew.
Seals can happily survive in the Thames, which is tidal through to Teddington Lock and contains a plentiful supply of fresh fish.
A spokesperson from RNLI Teddington has also reported that the topper will light up at 6:45pm every evening.
It is currently unknown whether the bear manning the topper's lifeboat is a volunteer or works full-time for the charity.
