Last month, Sainsbury's applied to open a Sainsbury's Local in the Painted Furniture Company building in Hampton Wick.

A printed copy of Sainsbury's premise licence application to Richmond Council has appeared in the window of the furniture store, causing objections from locals.

Many residents questioned where potential future shoppers would park their cars and are upset about the new shop replacing an independent local store.

Now Hampton Wick Association (HWA) is objecting to Sainsbury's application.

It has written directly, by post and by email, to the Chief Executive of J Sainsbury plc, Simon Roberts.

In its letter to Roberts, the HWA has "deliberately focused on one specific issue that will be of concern to everyone and which must be addressed by Sainsbury, namely loading".

Sainsbury's has also applied for a 24-hour alcohol licence, to the dismay of the HWA.

It says: " a busy multi-purpose shop trading such long hours may bring noise and other social problems to the High Street, affecting particularly those who live on the High Street."

Local resident Nick Rafferty also opposes Sainsbury's application, so has created a petition against its potential opening on Hampton Wick High Street.

You can sign the petition here.

Rafferty doesn't see the need for a Sainsbury's Local to open in Hampton Wick when there is already a Sainsbury's in Teddington.
