Sainsbury's local could replace independent furniture store on Hampton Wick High Street
It is suspected that a Sainsbury's Local is going to open on the site of The Painted Furniture Company on Hampton Wick High Street.
A printed copy of Sainsbury's premise licence application to Richmond Council has appeared in the window of the furniture store, causing such speculation.
The application suggests that the store will be open 24/7, seven days a week.
While some may see the new store as a positive for the High Street, others do not.
Nick Rafferty, who lives on the boarder of Teddington and Hampton Wick, shared his objections with Teddington Nub News, saying: "Personally I think it is unnecessary and would have a hugely negative impact on the local community should the application be granted.
"My objection is based on the effect it will have on the two local newsagents and also the size of the furniture shop."
He asks: "Where will people park and where will the delivery lorries park?
"I feel it's a sign of what's happening across the country with small independent businesses being muscled out by big companies unaffected by rising rents."
There are currently four parking spaces outside the Painted Furniture Company which could be repurposed into a loading bay for Sainsbury's delivery vans, but this would leave no space for shoppers to park.
Objections to the application can be submitted to the council until 8 October.
Details of how you can object can be found here.
If enough objections are received, then the application may have to be considered by the Council's full licensing committee.
