Hampton Court Bridge to partially close for three months as anti-terror safety measures installed

HAMPTON Court Bridge will be partly closed for three months from January 24 for roadworks.
Lane closures will be put in place and some traffic disruption is expected, Surrey County Council has warned.
Signs on alternative routes will be put up warning of potential delays.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the bridge but may be instructed to use only one of the pavements while work takes place on the other side.
The roadworks will see anti-terror safety measures including 150 bollards and a raised kerb installed.
The additions will protect the public and bridge from a potential attack involving a car mounting the pavement, and were approved by Elmbridge Council last month.
Hampton Court Bridge is popular with tourists and was identified as a site of a potential terrorist attack back in 2017, following incidents at Westminster and London bridges.
The Grade II listed Thames crossing links Hampton with East Molesey and is part of the busy A309 route.
Its closest neighbours are Kingston Bridge, 1.5 miles downstream, and Walton Bridge, 4 miles upstream.
Roadworks on Hampton Court Bridge will take place from 7.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm on Saturdays.
The lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
On its website giving notice of the roadworks, Surrey County Council states: "Works are required to prevent issues caused if an errant vehicle mounted the pavement.
"The measures will protect the bridge from potential structural damage and offers protection to the public in the event of vehicle attack by terrorists."
In response to the FAQ Is this likely to cause traffic disruption? the Council says: "The lane closures required to provide a safe working area for the workforce, materials and equipment means that there will be some disruption."
They add: "Appropriate traffic management will be in place to ensure that road users can safely travel past the works area.
"Advance warning signs and variable message boards will be used to inform members of the public of potential delays at locations where alternative routes may be used.
"We will also work with our contractor to minimise disruption wherever safe and practicable to do so."
