COVID-19: Smoke from bonfires can impact recovery of sufferers

The smoke caused by bonfires will make the symptoms worse for those suffering or recovering from COVID-19, the council has warned, following a 400% increase in complaints across the borough.
"Coronavirus affects the respiratory system, and smoke from bonfires can make symptoms worse for those battling the virus at home," said a spokesperson.
"People who are self-isolating or shielding cannot leave their homes and rely on fresh air from open windows – the pollution from bonfires can have a critical impact on those with breathing difficulties, putting even more pressure on the NHS. "
Because of the increase in the number of bonfires the council is urging residents to use alternative methods to dispose of their garden waste and vegetation such as composting - to protect their own health and that of others.
Or to use another service, such as the Garden Waste or Bulky Waste collection services – or to store waste safely at home for a future trip to Townmead Road household waste and recycling centre.
The council added:"We are also reminding residents and visitors that it is against local bylaws to light fires or use barbecues in any of the borough's parks and open spaces.
"People who do so can be fined. Barbecues nearly always leave behind scorched patches of grass that can take months to recover.
"Burning coals have even been tipped into litter bins, setting them on fire."
