Ukraine donations point opens in Teddington as borough shows solidarity
A DONATION point for supplies urgently needed in Ukraine has opened in Teddington as people across Richmond borough show their support for the invaded country.
Teddington skincare clinic Simply Skin are now collecting sanitary products, baby food and nappies at their reception.
The salon told Nub News that the donations will be delivered to Twickenham's Prosperity restaurant.
They said: "We have no Ukrainian friends or family but don't know currently of anywhere collecting in Teddington.
"And we thought well we have the space in reception and have collected sanitary products for homeless women before, so have been asking about to try and help."
The salon are also encouraging people to donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian appeal, which helps DEC charities provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to refugees and displaced families.
The UK government has committed to matching up to £20 million donated by the public to the appeal. Click this link for more information.
In Twickenham, a relief effort being organised at Ukranian-run family restaurant Prosperity on York Street.
The restaurant is sending vans with urgent supplies of medicine, nappies, blankets and baby food to Lviv, a city in Ukraine close to the border with Poland.
It has been inundated with support from people across Richmond borough, with queues down the street as people line up to donate what they can to the cause.
29-year-old Roman Kosynsky, who runs the restaurant with his parents, told MyLondon: "It is amazing and has brought tears to our eyes.
"We didn't ask anyone for help. People just enquired, shared the information online in community groups, and it quickly spread. It was all the community's idea."
Near to Prosperity, businesses on Twickenham's Church Street have shown solidarity with the invaded country.
The small cobbled street is now lined with an estimated thirty Ukrainian flags with photos of the act of solidarity widely shared on Twitter.
Further down Twickenham high street, the family-run fishmonger Sandy's has put up a moving light display showing the colours of the Ukraine flag and a message of peace.
Twickenham resident and local photographer Cathy Cooper has been helping sort and pack donations at Prosperity restaurant this week.
Yesterday she reflected on her experience.
"I could weep...but who am I to cry," she wrote in a post on Facebook.
"I just spent a few hours with other volunteers in the Prosperity Cafe sorting through the bags and bags of donations.
"I worked alongside Russian girls holding back their own emotions while taping up packets of nappies into carriable parcels.
"Organised chaos with so many helpers in a small space.
"People queuing outside and transit vans arriving ready to be filled and then off on the long journey to the Ukraine borders where other volunteers are waiting to distribute the goods.
"I am so so proud of my town."
