Teddington's Men had two objectives in their home match against Team Bath Buccaneers this week – to continue their 100% home record for the season and also to break a hoodoo in Bath being the only team in the League that the Teddies hadn't beaten. So they were well and truly up for this one.
The game began in a tight, structured format, as they tried to figure each other out, but as time progressed, the Teddies started to gain control. They created numerous chances, but worryingly the Home side just couldn't convert and the opening quarter ended goalless.
Teddies were taking strength from the opportunities they were managing to create and with the help of very threatening aerial balls from Jags Gill, Bath started to become slightly disjointed in defence and spaces began to open up.
After the offensive onslaught, a goal felt inevitable and it came from Ed Greaves dribbling his way along the baseline and then finding James Hall on the back post, who swiped the ball into the back of the net.
At the start of the second half Bath began to push harder in an attempt to wrench back control and they created several penalty corner opportunities. Despite the threat from the top of the circle, keeper Alex Rooney and Teddies' defensive crew stood firm as they fought hard to land a lean sheet.
Teddington's second was one for the hockey purists with the move starting deep inside their own half with some simple, but very effective build up along the backline, which developed into a fluid passage of play with some majestic hockey between Matt Steventon and Ciaran O'Connell.
It ended with a tidy deflection from Kyle White as Ciaran managed to carefully pick him out in the circle. The third quarter ended 2-0 to Teddington.
The last quarter was cagey, but very open as Bath had no choice but to open up. Both teams tried to capitalise on the lack of structure, but thanks to a firm Teddies defensive shift, Bath's chances were denied.
As a reward for a mighty defensive shift from the Teddies, a counter-attack opened up and Joe McConnell carried the ball down the line and managed to find Ed Wheeler, who had sprinted from his own circle to support the attack.
Wheeler stayed composed as he came one on one with the opposition keeper and managed to calmly slot it home for his first National League goal sealing the win 3-0.
In the end, it was a convincing win and an outstanding team performance, which they hope to take into the next game against University of Bristol at home.
