Alfy Whittingham's first goal for Hampton and Richmond proved to be enough to get back-to-back wins for the second time this season against Eastbourne Borough.

The first half was a cagey affair in which neither side was giving anything away for free and so chances were at a premium.

Then early in the second period Whittingham charged into the box to score and Hampton were able to see the game out and claim all three points.

The one-nil win takes the Beavers into the top half of the table as they jump up to 12th position and in the process leapfrogging their opposition in Eastbourne.

The Sports had the first sight of goal after 9 minutes when Shiloh Remy made a driving run through the Hampton midfield and into the penalty box before eventually getting his shot off straight at Joe Walsh.

Walsh was called into action again when Greg Luer was sent in behind from a long ball, but the on-loan QPR 'keeper was quick off his line to deal with the danger.

Hampton's first real opportunity came halfway through the half as Whittingham played the ball out wide and it was swung into the middle where Ade Shokunbi was waiting, but he couldn't make a strong enough contact with the ball and it went wide of the mark.

Straight after half-time Eastbourne had two sights of goal but Luer and Charlie Walker both conspired to shoot over the top from the top of the box.

The Beavers had their own early chance when Liam Vincent set Ruaridh Donaldson away down the side and he put the ball over to Tommy Wood and he took the ball down and turned but his effort was cleared off the line.

Hampton had got control of the game after those two early scares and their play was rewarded with a goal after 54 minutes as Shokunbi nodded the ball down and Whittington drove onto the ball and lashed it into the corner.

Ten minutes later Eastbourne would have struck back were it not for more good keeping from Walsh as Mitch Dickenson found himself unmarked from a corner but the 'keeper was equal to his header.

A minute later Hampton lost the ball high up the pitch and Eastbourne countered quickly through Leone Gravata and he cut inside and found space to shoot and whipped the effort just wide of the far post.

The Beavers could have won the game with ten minutes to play as they won a free-kick in a good area after Shokunbi had his shirt pulled and Tommy Davis got on the end of the cross but his header went straight at Lee Worgan.
