Gary McCann was left heartbroken after Hampton and Richmond were knocked out of the FA Cup by Torquay United.

Tommy Wood had given Hampton a half-time lead, but Torquay came roaring back in the second period with Dean Moxey and Aaron Jarvis scoring the goals to knock-out the Beavers.

McCann felt his team were more than good enough to have beaten the National League side but were once again unable to see the game through.

Speaking to club media, he said: "I am the most despondent I think I have ever felt as a manager, I have been doing this job a long time but I don't think I have ever felt so dejected and useless.

"The players have left it all out on the pitch there is no question of that and there is only one team who truly deserves to win tonight on performance and we felt the same at the weekend.

"We created more than enough to win tonight, we have limited them to very very little, but we are on the end of a defeat.

"I feel really disappointed and like I let a lot of people down today and that is the overriding emotion and I will take a bit of picking up.

"We have stood toe to toe, both games, with a National League side, they may be a team who are struggling but they are still a full-time outfit and have huge resources.

"We have to take the positives out of the performances and we are in a much better place than we were five or six weeks ago and we have to use the disappointment of tonight as motivation for climbing up the league."

McCann felt the youthful inexperience of his Hampton side was ultimately the factor which let them down across the two games.

He said: "We were totally in control and I don't want to call it an error as we have just watched it [the back pass] back and it was played by the centre forward and the error he [Matteo Salamon] has maybe made is hoping that they would see that.

"That turned the game on its head and it rocked us a little and we are such a young group that we don't really deal with that pressure and the situations as well as I would like us to.

"That has proved to be the case today and once we find ourselves chasing the game we are not at our best because we are young and naïve.

"There were too many youthful players out on the pitch and too many that when decisions need to be made, we don't tend to do it well and that has been the case for a lot of the season."
