Teddington RFC crowned league Champions for second consecutive season
Teddington RFC were crowned league champions for the second consecutive season on Saturday 16 March following a hectic game at Eastbourne.
The bonus point win down on the Sussex coast means the Antlers now have an unassailable lead at the top of Surrey/Sussex One and will compete next season in the Regional 2 leagues (RFU level 6), the highest level of competition the club has been involved in.
The game was not one for the respective defence coaches, but it was full of action with 15 try's being scored in total, nine for Teddington and six for Eastbourne.
It was a match in which Teddington always had their noses in front but one in which they could never shake off Eastbourne, who thoroughly deserved their try bonus point which keeps them on course for a top half finish this season.
The first half saw the visitors establish a healthy lead thanks to three early try's from Max AITKEN, Emmo ALLEN, and Ethan DAVIES.
Unfortunately, three early injuries meant the Antlers bench was used up inside the first half, but the substitutes made their mark, with both Dan ROBERTSHAW and Rory MERCER wasting no time getting on the scoresheet.
Eastbourne's two try's meant Teddington turned around 29-17 to the good at half time.
The second half followed a see-saw pattern with both sides scoring four try's apiece. The highlight was a try for first team coach Matt SEARLE who made his Antlers playing debut off the bench.
There were further try's for Gabe ROBERTS, Bob BEEVERS, and Stuart RIDLER to help cement the league title for Teddington and kick off the celebrations with two games to spare.
The league champions will be back in front of their home support on Saturday as they host Weybridge Vandals before a trip to Hove for the last game of the league season.
Once the league fixtures are over the cup campaign gets underway as Teddington embark on their quest to complete the Double Double.
Final Score Eastbourne RFC 41 Teddington RFC 53.
The 2nd XV had a tough afternoon at high flying Bec Old Boys. On a positive note, there were strong debuts for current colts Tom Pugh, Dylan de Ferry, and Matt Venner.
Final Score Bec OB 2nd XV 66 Teddington 2nd XV 7.
The Vets travelled over to Old Ruts to help them celebrate their 100th anniversary. Again, a huge positive with 8 Fat Stags debuts from the current crop of minis dads. The vets just went down in a close battle.
Final Score Old Ruts Vets 22 Teddington Vets 15.
