Would-be Sea shanty singers invited to Celebrate 200 Years of the RNLI at workshops and concert in Teddington
Singers, choir members and sea shanty fans are invited to take part in a series of workshops along the Thames in October and November, culminating in a concert alongside folk band, The Monkeyfists.
The two-hour workshops take place near or at Tower Bridge, Chiswick and Teddington Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboat Stations.
Anyone keen to learn a sea shanty or two will be welcome, whether pub and amateur choirs, singing groups or enthusiastic individuals.
Participants will also be invited to take part in a public concert at Teddington's Landmark Arts Centre on 2 November.
Acclaimed shanty and folk group, The Monkeyfists will headline alongside The Landmark's own choir.
'These fundraising events offer a fun way to bring together fans of the sea shanty and our wonderful supporters.
For 200 years the RNLI has relied on donations and legacies to offer a life saving service around the UK and Ireland.
The Thames RNLI lifeboat stations are the three busiest lifeboat stations in the UK and began its own voyage just 21 years ago.
Miranda Jaggers, Teddington RNLI Water Safety Officer and member of the Landmark Singers said, ' I'm very excited about Saturday's London's Lifeboats Shanty Concert at the Landmark Arts Centre.
"By the end of the afternoon 100 singers will have taken part in workshops over the past three weeks at Tower, Battersea and Teddington. In the evening we will all come together to raise our voices with the Monkeyfists to mark the RNLI's 200th anniversary and celebrate London's volunteer lifeboat crews, who work tirelessly to save lives on the Thames ."
