A popular cobbler is now in a coma after being knocked off his e-scooter on Heath Road in a dramatic accident near Teddington last week.

Anthony Mumford, 53, has run Toes & Knees shoe repair on Church Street in Twickenham for 15 years and is known for his kindness and big heart .

But last week the married father-of-one suffered life-threatening injuries when he came off his e-scooter while returning home from work.

He was rushed to a major trauma centre and is now in a coma. His condition is said to be stable.

A fundraiser was set up at the weekend to help Anthony and his family.

It raised over £7,000 in 3 days and is well on the way to its £9,999 target.

Shona Lyons of the Church Street group in Twickenham set the page up on Justgiving.com.

The fundraiser states: "Were raising £9,999 to Help Anthony Mumford & family keep his shop Toes and Knees & everything going after his terrible accident. He is in a coma but stable."

In the page description , Shona added: "Anthony Mumford has had his Cobbler and key cutting shop in Church Street Twickenham for approximately 15 years.

"He is a big part of our community & is known for his big heart & kindness often charging next to nothing if he thinks he can help someone less fortunate & always ingenious with his craft work in finding creative solutions to difficult problems.

"Everyone knows him, most have been helped by him in some way and we all love him. Right now he is in a coma after a terrible road accident in Twickenham on his way home from work on the 15th of July.

"We would like to help his partner Cheryl and his son keep his beloved shop going so he has something to look forward and help him on his road to recovery.

"There will be other financial burdens that the family face now too and as a community we should all come together to help them to survive this ordeal."

Messages of support paying tribute to Tony's skills and character have flooded in alongside the donations.

Paul Ewles wrote: "Tony has always been helpful over many years, especially with repairing old faithful shoes and treasured clocks.

"A true gentleman. We wish him a speedy recovery."

And Caro Nunn posted: "Tony, the heart of Church Street a really dear soul and a wonderful character truly ingenious with his skills.

"Wishing him all things well with his recovery so sad to hear the news of his accident."
