Tidal wave of litter revealed – Call for action

A tide of litter has been revealed on the hard shoulder of the A316 following grass cutting.

A carpet of plastic, bottles, glass, bags, beer cans, fast food cups and food wrappers emerged once contractors had cut back the vegetation.

And the action of the high power blades served only to carve up the waste into small, difficult to remove pieces.

The issue was highlighted by Ricky Pound, a local resident and former manager at several leading historic buildings, including Marble Hill House and park, Turner's House and Chiswick House.

He suggested that the rubbish can be traced to fans attending matches and events at Twickenham stadium, coupled with a lack of bins and any routine litter picks.

Apart from the eyesore, the waste presents and threat to wildlife and, potentially, could start or fuel a fire during heatwave and the resulting tinderbox conditions.

Posting a video on Twitter, Mr Pound said: "This is what the grass verge looks like along the A316 (by the rugby stadium) when the grass is cut. It reveals all kinds of discarded trash which is then cut to shreds by the movers into smaller pieces. Why are litter pickers not employed?"

He complained that there is not a single litter bin on this stretch of the road, which is heavily used by visitors to both Twickenham stadium and the Harlequins Stoop.

Mr Pound told Nub News it was time for a concerted plan of action to remove the litter.

"I think the best solution would be for the local council and the rugby stadium to get together and come up with a plan. More bins between St Margarets and the rugby stadium and a regime of litter picking along that stretch of road following each rugby match," he said.
