Eco-friendly renovations proposed for Teddington Swimming Pool
By Tilly O'Brien 4th Sep 2026
Teddington Swimming Pool, which is part of Teddington Pool and Fitness Centre on Vicarage Road, could get an eco-friendly renovation.
Drees & Sommer has submitted a planning application to Richmond Council seeking permission for the eplacement of gas-fired boilers with air source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water and the installation of a rooftop air source heat pump acoustic compound.
It also hopes for the installation of solar PV panels, recovering of existing flat roof sections (excluding pool hall roof), and internal first floor modifications to provide access into the rooftop air source heat pump acoustic compound via a new door.
The application site lies within land owned by LBR and includes the operational curtilage of Teddington Pool & Fitness Centre.
To the rear of the property lies Vicarage Road Playground (VRP), which is also known as Wades Lane Ground Play Area (WLGPA).
This open space sits within the wider boundary of the Council land. VRP extends to approximately 0.21 ha and is designated as:
Public Open Space (POS)
Other Open Land of Townscape Importance (OOLTI)
The works within this application make no changes to the current VRP with the works being installed within the existing curtilage of the building. Therefore, there will be no loss of open space.
In a planning application document, Drees & Sommer said: "Maintaining existing open space is important due to the many benefits it provides residents and communities.
"The proposals within the planning application intend to work with this, which is why the design proposals avoid any impact to the VRP and instead intend to install a new plant on the existing roof structure of Teddington Pool & Fitness Centre.
"Overall, therefore, there is no adverse impact on the open space at Teddington Pool & Fitness Centre, Vicarage Road, Teddington, and there are no policy grounds on which this application should be refused."
Richmond Council expects to make a decision on this application by 28 October.
