The Red Lion pub in Teddington is holding a live music event this Saturday, 31 August.

The event was originally meant to be held last Saturday, 24 August, but was unfortunately cancelled due to the rainy weather as the event was planned to be held in the pub's beer garden.

It will host a variety of local artists and bands, including Tim West, Anna Dyson, The Unique Technique, The Lemon Sharks, and Hawkwind.

The event is free, and there will also be a BBQ, face painting, and other stalls run by local artists, including a painting stall and a pottery stall.

The Red Lion first held a similar music festival on 29 June of this year and saw 250 guests.

This event though, is in recognition of the pub's new ownership, run by Kanwar G. Singh, who took over the pub in November 2023.

While Singh was previously a chef for 25 years, he is a self-proclaimed "publican" who started running pubs in 2019 and owns another pub.

He switched from being a chef to running pubs because he "wanted to do something [he] loves and why not?"

Singh said: "I live two streets away from The Red Lion, having lived in Teddington for 13 years, so when I saw it was for sale, I had to take the chance.

The pub was quite sad. I'm a publican and love pubs, but I never came to this pub."

Singh told Teddington Nub News that "The Red Lion should be the living room of Teddington where punters can come and chill. I want it to be a community pub with good food and good drinks".

Signh plans for the pub to sell

The pub currently has a small kitchen that sells a small menu "all fresh food, no microwaved food," says Singh, but he plans to expand the kitchen next year, selling traditional pub food with a French and Italian twist, along with Spanish tapas.

Singh took ownership of the pub on 1 November of this year and carried out a refurbishment before reopening the doors on 29 November 2023.

He said: "It's a great pub, but it's not been great for the past seven or eight years. It had a tough time and lots of problems."

However, "trade has improved" since Singh took over and the locals "have started coming back," says Singh.

Singh's refurbishment has worked wonders for the pub.

It boasts a large spacious room, a fully stocked bar, a large function room which punters can hire for events, and the most gorgeous beer garden I've ever seen with lots of comfy seats fit for 150 people, a kid's play area, and a cute little water fountain with a stone lion's head.

Singh told Teddington Nub News that The Red Lion is the only pub in the area to have a large beer garden and kid's play area.

The pub's owner welcomes families and offers children a three-course meal for just £10.

The Red Lion is also not far from St Mary's University, so Singh is giving students a 10% discount from Monday – Wednesday.

Under his management, Singh hosts two music events a month, making use of the pub's piano, and a pub quiz twice a month.

The pub also makes a "great Sunday Roast" says Singh and plays live sports on its ten TVs both inside and outside, having a licence for Sky Sports.

When the Euros were on earlier this year, The Red Lion hosted 300-odd punters to watch the final.

"It was great to see the community come together to watch England play," Singh said.

Manu, who is part of the pub's management team, said: "I started this journey together with Kanwar from day one. I'm 33 years old, born in Romania and arrived in the UK nine years ago.

I have been working in the hospitality industry for 12 years now, after graduating from Anglia Ruskin University with a degree in Hospitality and Business Management."

He continued: "I have a passion for the industry, and I love engaging and working with people. I live in Teddington, and I love the culture and people here."

The event on Saturday will run from 1pm-10pm. All are welcome.
