Thai Warung, located at 35 High Street, Hampton Wick, first opened its doors on 21 December before closing for Christmas and reopening in January.
As a lover of both Thai and Indonesian cuisines, upon seeing that Thai Warung serves food combining a mix of both these cuisines, I just had to try.
As I entered the restaurant yesterday, Thursday 6 February, I was greeted by the lovely Nabeel, who co-owns the restaurant with his friends Tariq and Umar.
The restaurant was pretty empty, not surprising for 5.30pm on a cold Thursday evening, so I had lots of choice as to where to sit and was pleased with how pristinely clean it was inside.
I loved the blueish Japanese-style décor matched with the wooden floors, walls, and benches as it made the restaurant bright and reminded me of spring – just what we need during these colder months.

However, Nabeel told me, he and his co-owners plan to change the interior to match the darker theme of their other restaurant of the same name in Maidenhead if everything with the restaurant goes well.
He said that the current interior has been left from the previous Japanese restaurant Taberu, which was located where Thai Warung is now housed.
Despite the restaurant combining two rather different cuisines, I was surprised to see that the menu was fairly small, offering classic Thai dishes such as spring rolls and Thai Green Curry.
Speaking about why the friends and co-owners decided to give Thai Warung an Indo-Thai theme, Nabeel told me that he and Tariq had a friend (Umar), who already worked in Thai cuisine, so thought 'why not start their own restaurant that mixes Thai food with Indonesian food?'
The menu offers a range of starters, rice and noodle dishes, soups and salads, curries, stir fries, sides, and kids meals.

For starters, I opted for Breaded Prawns with sweet chilli sauce, and as Thai Warung is a 'Bring Your Own Booze' (BYOB) restaurant, I opted for a diet coke.
I was surprised at how quickly my starter came, but again the restaurant wasn't too busy, so this is probably why, and I was super hungry, so I was glad.
I loved my starter; the breadcrumbs were that perfectly crumbly texture mixed with the juiciness of the prawns, and the sweet chilli sauce was just delish.
The portion was perfect too, not too filling for one, but could also be enough to share.

For main's, I had a classic Pad Thai dish with prawns (I'm pescatarian), which again came out pretty quickly.
The meal came out on a lovely little wooden dish and again was not too big but big enough.
The dish was nice, but a little bit spicy for me. Now, I don't have Pad Thai often, but I don't think it's meant to be spicy - I could be wrong.
Regardless of this, I still devoured most of the meal, I loved the mixture of textures of the food; the softness of the noodles, the crunchiness of the veg and crumbled peanuts, and the juiciness of the prawns.

All in all, it was a decent meal, perfect for a casual meal out, if that's what you're looking for, and reasonably priced too, coming to £23 for a starter, main, and drink.
My only complaint is that it would have gone perfectly with a nice glass of white, so I'd definitely recommend bringing your own booze if that's what you're into.
I mentioned that my meal was perfect for a casual dinner out, and this matches the casual vibe of Thai Warung.
With it's small but sweet interior, Thai Warung is not the type of restaurant you'd get dressed up for and expect to splash the cash.
Instead, I'd say it's the perfect restaurant to go to if you can't be bothered cooking and want a cheap and cheerful meal out in the local area that you can go to in your trackies, especially as it's perfectly located on Hampton Wick's high street and right opposite the bus stop for the 281, which goes between Kingston and Teddington.
To add to this, Thai Warung delivers too, which Nabeel says has been "busy".
Currently, you can order from Thai Warung on delivery apps Deliveroo and Just Eat, and you will soon see the restaurant feature on Uber Eats too.
What's more is that residents who mention that they heard about Thai Warung from Teddington Nub News will get 15% off their meals.
Just tell the waiter at some point while you're there.
Thai Warung is open from 5pm – 10.30pm Friday – Tuesday, and until 10pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
