Work is set to begin in July on the instalment of two new lifts between the two platforms on Station Road and Victoria Road at Teddington Station.
The £4.2m 'Access for All' scheme will be funded by the Department of Transport (DFT) and will aim to improve the accessibility at the popular station for disabled and elderly passengers as well as families with young children and prams.
News that work on the project will begin next month has been welcomed by residents and commuters, with those unable to cross the 52 step footbridge at Teddington Station currently having to embark on a 20 minute walk to change platforms.
It is anticipated that most of the work will take place during daytime hours from 07.30am until 18.00pm from Monday to Friday, with the Access for All scheme scheduled for completion by Spring 2024.
According to Network Rail, there may be occasions when the work will need to take place overnight or during weekends when trains are not running.
To facilitate the construction for the lift on the Platform Two side (near the garden centre), the adjacent footpath on Station Road will need to be closed.
Network Rail also say specialist equipment used for the works is designed to minimise noise disruption in the local area but warn there may be some disturbance as well as increased traffic from delivery vehicles.
Twickenham MP Munira Wilson, who also represents Teddington residents within her constituency, said: "Making our train stations accessible for all is so important for the people in our community, and especially for the elderly, the disabled and families with young children. The installation of lifts at Teddington station is great news for all residents."
A separate £5.7m Access for All scheme is also underway at Barnes Station which will see a new, open footbridge at the eastern end of the existing platform.
David Wilby, South Western Railway's regional development manager, added: "Constructing and attaching new lifts to the existing footbridge at Teddington and the new footbridge and lifts at Barnes are important for all of our customers, including those with reduced mobility and for customers who require lifts to gain access to the platforms.
"These are just two of the six multi-million-pound accessibility projects that will be completed at South Western Railway stations by 2024, which are thanks to both a significant investment by the Access for All team and, in this case, the hard work, and long periods of campaigning by our stakeholders."
