Teddington Society gives design awards to "two very different buildings"

Two buildings in Teddington, very different from each other, have been presented with a Teddington Society Design Award.

First was Teddington Cricket Club for its new pavilion building, designed by architect Jim Reed in Bushy Park; then the Park Hotel for the careful and sympathetic restoration of its Grade II listed premises.

Presenting the award to the cricket club, Keith Atkinson, who heads the Society's Planning Group, said, "The building design respects the unique landscape of Bushy Park, and the high-quality materials selected enable it to blend with the natural backdrop."

He also praised the fact that the building is heated via pumps concealed under the field, and that the flat roof terrace has concealed drainage as well as a 'green' roof section.

At the Park Hotel presentation a few days later, he said, "The hotel is sited in a very prominent position in the town.

"However, over the years it has not always been well-maintained or presented, and at times has looked run down.

"But happily, all that has changed. The careful and sympathetic restoration and redecoration of the façade, the high quality of the signage, lighting and awnings have all helped to upgrade and raise the profile of this fine historic building.

"The car parking area is unobtrusive and screened by a wall and vegetation. The garden areas and forecourt are well designed and the attractive planting and seating enhance the site."

He said afterwards that the Teddington Society monitored planning applications and liaised with developers and Richmond Council to encourage buildings that would improve the townscape.

"We also give design awards – sparingly, I might say – for new or renovated buildings which have made a positive impact on our town. Both the cricket pavilion and the hotel meet those criteria, and we congratulate the club and the hotel management for the very positive contributions they have made, in different ways, to Teddington's unique character."
