Teddington runners: get your trainers on for the Thames Meander Marathon this Saturday!

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 5th Nov 2021

Since indoor venues have been allowed to reopen their doors we have seen a host of events going on throughout Teddington and across the country.

You can find all sorts of events, from concerts to art classes to canoeing taster sessions, on our newly revamped What's On section.

With the Olympics on right now it seems apt to highlight the upcoming Thames Meander Marathon on Saturday.

This year's Thames-side run will be a fantastic spectator and participator sport, so get your trainers on and wander down to the riverside this weekend to cheer on those athletes.

The marathon is in its eighth year and organised by Race Director David Ross.

David told Nub News: "It's a lovely scenic out / back trail running event with lovely views of the river Thames all the way along the Thames Path.

"We like runners of varying abilities and it's one of the most popular trail running events in the UK."

The course is a at, scenic riverside trail marathon - perfect for getting your personal best (PB).

Runners can do a full marathon, starting at 8.30am, or half marathon starting at 9.30am.

The marathon starts and ï¬nishes at the YMCA Hawker Centre HQ on Lower Ham Road, just a short walk from Teddington Lock.

Runners will meander along the Thames Path out to the far side of Kingston's Canbury Gardens, before returning past the HQ and along the Thames Path trail as far as Barn Elms Rowing Club in Wandsworth - then turning around and coming back again!

The half marathon route starts runners off in the opposite direction to the marathon and meanders along the Thames Path out to the ï¬rst turnaround point at the Kew Gardens car park.

Runners will then return past the race HQ and on towards Canbury Gardens just past the Boaters Inn Pub, where they will turn around for the final time in the race and run to the ï¬nish at the YMCA HQ.

The mass running event comes after the successful return of Bushy parkrun last month, following over a year of cancelled 5ks.

With so many keen runners in Teddington and being the hometown of 4-time long distance gold-medallist Mo Farah, we're expecting to see many from our town take part!

So if you are running in the event, please feel free to send us your photos - we'd love to publish them!

And don't forget to add your events to our free What's On section.
