Teddington RNLI joins emergency services in Thames rescue search

The Teddington Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) launched both lifeboats on Friday (11 July) to a report of people in trouble in the Thames near Swan Island in Twickenham.
The RNLI crew joined the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and Met Police in an extensive search for the people involved before being stood down by the HM Coastguard.
The LFB was called at 2.46pm on Friday and Control Officers mobilised crews from Kingston, Surbiton, Wimbledon and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The incident was over for firefighters by 3.23pm.
The Met Police reports that there were no injuries.
Teddington RNLI told Nub News that it launched its lifeboats within 11 minutes after being paged and that the lifeboats were launched by an all-female shore crew.
An LFB spokesperson said: "We know people will be looking for ways to cool off during this heatwave, but please don't be tempted to jump into open water. Sadly, we're currently seeing around two incidents every day where someone is in difficulty in the water.
"Open water may look inviting, but it's unpredictable. Strong currents, underwater hazards, and cold-water shock all pose serious risks.
"Even on hot days, the water can be dangerously cold. Cold water shock can affect anyone, no matter how fit or experienced they are. It can cause involuntary gasping, water inhalation, and in the worst cases, drowning.
"Designated swimming areas have lifeguards and safety measures in place, but open water spots do not. Think twice before taking the risk.
"If you do find yourself in difficulty, remember the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's 'Float to Live' advice: tilt your head back with your ears submerged, relax, and try to control your breathing. Use your hands and feet to help you stay afloat.
"And if you see someone else in trouble, never jump in after them. Call 999, encourage them to float on their back, and throw them something that floats.
"We want everyone to enjoy the summer safely. Take a moment to familiarise yourself with local lifesaving equipment like throwlines, which are available at many of London's waterways. There's also a wealth of water safety advice on our website to help people stay safe during the warmer months."
If you are ever in trouble in the water, you should call 999 for the Coastguard.
