A PUB in Teddington has become the new home of Richmond borough's chess club, more than 120 years after it first hosted the group.
Richmond and Twickenham Chess Club will be meeting for weekly social and match chess at the Adelaide Pub on Park Road on Tuesday evenings from 7.30-10.30pm.
The Adelaide first became a venue for the club, then known as the Thames Valley Chess Club, back in 1901.
The news of the club's move was reported in the Surrey Comet on October 5 of that year.
Richmond and Twickenham Chess Club saw its membership double last year as lockdown and popular TV show The Queens Gambit sparked a renewed interest in the game.
Their first meeting of the year at The Adelaide is tonight (4 January) at 7.30pm and non-members are welcome to come along for a trial session.
Attendees are required to wear a mask while in the playing room, as per government advice.
Announcing the news of the move on their website, Richmond and Twickenham Chess Club said: "After being homeless for two months, we're delighted to be back again in this popular and friendly pub.
"Thanks to all our members for their patience over the past few weeks, and to our TVL and Surrey opponents for their co-operation when we had to postpone our home fixtures.
"It's strange how history repeats itself, isn't it?"
