A local group near Teddington has issued a plea for donations for recently arrived Afghan refugees.

Friends of Twickenham Green and The United Reformed Church have linked up as the The Friends of Twickenham Green Afghan Appeal.

They are organising the collection and delivery of essential items to refugees this week.

The group says all donations are welcome but the following are in high demand.

- Dolls & Toys

- Books & Games

- Toiletries and hygiene items, including: toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, menstrual products, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand sanitiser and moisturiser

To donate, take the items to the The United Reformed Church in First Cross Road, Twickenham at these times:

Wednesday 1 September: 11:00 to 1:00pm.

Thursday 2 September: 10:00 to 12:00 midday.

Saturday 4 September: 12:00 to 2.00pm.

Sunday 5 September 11:30 to 12:30pm.

Once they have sorted the items, the donations will be taken to the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association in Feltham.

Meanwhile, appeals for donations to West Middlesex Hospital have been circulating on social media.

However in a statement released yesterday (29 August) the hospital confirmed it is not taking any donations yet.

They said: "We are grateful for generous donations for Afghan families.

"Please hold off donating until we have clear lists of needs and the right collection places to make sure your generosity goes to the best place.

"We will be sure to publicise on our website and social media when we can take donations. Thank you so much for your good wishes."
