DAFFODILS are in bloom across Richmond borough despite it still being over a month until Spring 2022 officially starts.

The stunning yellow flowers pictured above can be seen in Home Park, just to the right hand side of the Kingston Gate.

Last year the Home Park daffodils, believed to be wild, were in bloom even earlier on 3rd January.

The flowers are usually associated with Easter and the start of spring, making their winter opening something of a mystery.

But according to a recent report in the New Scientist magazine, climate change appears to be behind unseasonable blooms in the UK with the trend starting in the 1980s.

And variations on traditional daffodil include 'February Gold' varieties - which could also explain their early appearance.

Last November, Egyptian goslings were spotted in Bushy Park despite birthing season for birds usually occurring in the warmer months of Spring and Summer.

However, the mystery of unseasonal Egyptian geese births may also not be due just to climate change - wildlife experts believe the birds are still not used to our colder winters compared to their native Africa.
