Teddington COVID UPDATE: drop in cases across borough following July spike

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 5th Nov 2021

The rate of Covid-19 infections in Richmond borough is falling steadily, following a sharp rise in early and mid-July.

The number of new cases of the virus in Richmond upon Thames has declined for the second week in a row, going from 670 on 24 July to 514 on 31 July.

This follows a sharp rise earlier in July, with new Covid-19 cases growing by 27% and then 99% over the first two weeks of the month.

The rate of coronavirus infections in Richmond hit its peak on 17 July, when over 1000 people contracted the illness over the past 7 days.

This decline is in keeping with a national trendof decreasing Covid rates in the UK.

And fewer than 1 per every 1,000 people who contract the illness are now dying from it, a significant reduction from 60 per 1,000 last winter, the BBC reports.

The decline in deaths from the virus has been attributed to the high Covid-19 vaccination rate in the UK, with 85 million doses given out since the vaccination programme began in January 2021.

There is now a push to get young people vaccinated as a fifth of hospital casesof the illness are people in the 18-34 age group.

And only 68% of UK 18-29 year olds have had their first dose of the vaccine.

Walk-in vaccination clinics are still being rolled out across Richmond.
