Teddington 'beach' returns

Sunbathers and swimmers have been spotted at Teddington Lock.

Sun-seekers were seen lying on the rocky stretch between the two bridges of the Lock this afternoon, enjoying the balmy 24 degrees weather.

Many are wearing swimming costumes and a group was seen diving off the boat jetty into the Thames, while others dipped their toe in.

Most of the people at the 'beach' are young, as has been the case in previous years.

Last year Richmond Council warned against cooling off in the river, however tempting it may be.

Cllr Gareth Roberts, Leader of the Council, said at the time: "Chances are the people who are jumping in the Thames never read Council press releases - but their parents might.

"If you have children or young adults living with you then please talk to them about the dangers of jumping in the river.

"You have the drug and sex talk – this is just as important.

"Some parts of the Thames are very deep and bodies of water stay cold whatever the weather. It is very easy to get into trouble and drown.

"People who have been drinking lose their inhibitions and decide to swim in the river against their better judgement.

"Please talk to your children and tell them not to be tempted to cool off during the warm weather, it is extremely dangerous and they should avoid it at all costs.

"Also, actions like this put huge pressure on the emergency services who are extremely stretched already due to the COVID-19 pandemic."
