England's 'anthem' may be banned because of slavery controversy

The familiar and traditional anthem of England rugby, 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' which is belted out by the massive Twickenham crowds could be banned, it was revealed today.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced that it is carrying out a review into the singing of the well-loved theme, admitting that many fans are unaware of its historic links to slavery.

The RFU did not rule out appealing to supporters not to sing the song in the future because of the current controversy and institutions such as universities and councils are coming under increasing pressure to act.

An RFU spokesperson said: "The RFU has stated we need to do more to achieve diversity and we are determined to accelerate change and grow awareness. The Swing Low, Sweet Chariot song has long been part of the culture of rugby and is sung by many who have no awareness of its origins or sensitivities.

"We are reviewing its historical context and our role in educating fans to make informed decisions."
