What's on in Teddington is brought to you by our sponsors: Landmark Arts Centre, Nix Academy, The King's Head, and The Wharf.

Welcome to your weekly update of what's on in and around Teddington.

Every Thursday we round up all the eye-catching events occurring in your area over the weekend, but this week is a little different.

Teddington's iconic creative hub, Landmark Arts Centre, is holding a series of half- to three-day creative workshops over the coming weeks.

While the centre is known as a venue for numerous weekly tutorials and courses – staples of our weekly What's On roundups – they can prove a major commitment for some budding artists.

To help cater to these creatives, Landmark Arts Centre is offering dozens of shorter workshops over the summer, allowing locals to try their hand at a number of new techniques and mediums.

One of the classes will share how to use egg tempera, a medium where colour pigments are binded with egg yolk to create a fast-drying paint, as seen in Crevole Madonna by Duccio di Buoninsegna. (Photo: Public domain via Wikimedia Commons)

Wth so many courses to choose from – from botanical sketches to egg tempera painting – it may be tricky to find your next artistic endeavour.

Luckily, Teddington Nub News is on hand to provide a few top picks from the summer programme to help get you inspired for your next masterpiece in a hurry.

(Remember: you can still add your local event for free using the Nub It button in our What's On section for a chance to be featured in next week's roundup!)

Multi Block Lino Printing – 5 to 6 August, two days

Starting our roundup is multi-disciplinary artist Louise Anderson, who is sharing her lino printing skills with Teddington artists over a very practical two-day course.

By carving out different 'blocks', students will use multiple colours and achieve bold, eye-catching prints by the end of the workshop.

Much of the specialist equipment will be provided along with one-to-one time with the tutor, but attendees are encouraged to make the most of their time by coming with a few ideas prepared. An apron is a must too!

Sketch, Draw & Paint by the River Thames – 15 August, one day

Prefer to get out of the studio and make the most of the (belated) summer weather? Then Louise's one-day plein air course is just for you. We did say she was a multi-disciplinary artist…

En plein air – literally 'outdoors' in French – refers to artworks created entirely outside, first pioneered by John Constable in the early 1800s and later used extensively by impressionists.

This accessible technique can use any number of mediums, and is an excellent excuse to get out and about in Teddington's green spaces, from Thameside walks to romps around Bushy or Home Parks.

The course is open to all, with no experience or specialist equipment required.

Introduction to Screenwriting – 16 August, one day

Penning the world's next great play or film is a romantic dream for many, but it can seem intimidating to the uninitiated. After all, how are you going to write an hours-long epic when you don't know where to start in the first place? Our suggestion is that you can't go wrong with this introductory course by Sheridan Humphrey from the Met Film School as a first step!

With a pen, notebook, and six hours on Friday 16 August, you can get to grips with the basics of writing a screenplay, from story structure and formatting to how you can put the screen in your screenwriting.

No experience is required – just get ready to 'unleash your inner storyteller'.

Gesture Drawing from Live Music – 19 August, one to three days

Our slice of London is blessed with a huge number of music venues. Some might make frequent trips across the Thames to The Fighting Cocks and Banquet Records gigs in Kingston, while others are regulars at intimate performances in Twickenham's Jazz Sanctuary and The Cabbage Patch, not to mention the historical Eel Pie Island.

Even Teddington can boast several itself, like the easy-going duos and quartets at The Wharf, folksy classics at The King's Head, Hampton Pool's tribute acts, and of course, Landmark Arts Centre itself, begging the question: what better subject is there for local artists than the music scene?

Emily Burton, described as a 'firm but smiley' tutor, will hold a three-hour introductory class on Monday 19 August before offering students the chance to put their newfound skills to the test at the rehearsals of either a concert band (Tuesday 20 August) or string orchestra (Thursday 22 August).

Tickets are selling fast, so book soon to avoid disappointment.

Speed Writing: songs in 30 minutes or less – August 21, two hours

(Photo: Kevin Fox via Landmark Arts Centre)

Perhaps you'd rather be on the other side of the sketchbook? Then Landmark Arts Centre still has you covered.

Short courses clearly play to the strengths of musician Kevin Fox, who is holding a two-hour course on how to beat writer's block and write a song in just half an hour.

The tutor says: "For some, the biggest barrier to creativity is just getting started. This workshop encourages us to jump in and go, before our brains can say no!"

Using improvisation and other techniques to overcome our inner perfectionists, Kevin hopes his course will help musicians from all walks of life become more confident in getting creative.

The workshop's listing also has a cryptic request for one student to bring a boring textbook or novel with them… and if that suspense doesn't get you to sign up, we don't know what will.

That's not all – there are plenty more workshops and short courses on offer at Landmark Arts Centre this summer, available here.

Don't forget about the centre's ongoing Park Arts Competition. Artists have until the end of the month – 11:59pm on 31 July – to enter. Check out our full article here for more information.
