A solar-powered dayboat is set to travel 200 kilometres along the Thames in a week-long journey.

The trip, which will begin in Lechlade, Gloucestershire, and end in Teddington, aims to showcase the capabilities of renewable energy in waterway transport.

Torkmar, a UK firm specialising in sustainable propulsion solutions, is behind the challenge, which will see its DB1 dayboat travel approximately 200 kilometres of the Thames without using fossil fuels or shore-based charging.

The vessel will rely solely on power generated by its onboard solar panels.

Tim Knox, owner of Torkmar, said: "This journey is about more than simply travelling from A to B.

"We want to demonstrate what's already possible with today's renewable technology and encourage conversations about sustainable transport, innovation and the future of our waterways.

"We hope people along the Thames will follow our progress and come along to support us during the week."

The route covers approximately 200km and will take the crew through a series of towns and communities, including Lechlade, Oxford, Abingdon, Wallingford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames, Marlow, Windsor, Staines, Kingston upon Thames, and Teddington.

The journey will begin on Tuesday, August 11, and end on Sunday, August 16.

On Monday, August 10, Mr Knox and his wife Sue will be in Lechlade ahead of departure in the morning.

The itinerary includes planned stops each day at key locations along the river.

From Oxford to Wallingford on August 12, from Wallingford to Henley-on-Thames on August 13, from Henley to Eton on August 14, from Eton to Kingston upon Thames on August 15, and finally from Kingston to Teddington on August 16.

Throughout the week, the couple will share regular updates, photographs, and videos documenting the journey, weather conditions, energy production, and the daily realities of long-distance solar-powered boating.

Mr Knox said he hopes the journey will spark wider interest in sustainable transport solutions and the role renewable technology can play in shaping the future of the UK's inland waterways.

He believes the voyage can help raise awareness and inspire further innovation in clean boating, not just in the UK but internationally.

Residents, environmental groups, boating enthusiasts, and media are encouraged to engage with the project as it passes through their areas.
