Richmond Council's plans to convert an old Hampton police station into a care home faces delays after changes were made to the scheme.

Richmond Council approved plans to turn Hampton Police Station into a care home with 66 bedrooms and 22 care suites in 2021, but applicant Hampton Care Home Limited said this development is no longer viable.

Hampton Care Home has now submitted plans to instead offer 75 bedrooms and eight care suites at the care home on Station Road, Hampton, which would reduce the number of residents from 93 to 91 people.

The number of car parking spaces has also been slashed from 24 to 21 bays.

The care home would have a café, kitchen, hair and beauty salon, dining rooms, lounges, communal gardens and offices.

The Victorian police station building would be kept under the plans, while all other buildings on the site would be demolished.

The police station shut in 1968 when it became an office.

Documents submitted with the application said the previous plans "can no longer be delivered due to changes in Hampton Care Home's business model and 'challenging economic conditions".

The care home would be managed by Cinnamon Care Collection, which offers 24-hour care at "luxury" care homes across England, and it would be for elderly and frail people in need of support.

The documents said the development will "continue to provide a high standard of living and accommodation for residents with increasingly complex conditions in the community".

It aims to provide residents with "first-rate care' while allowing them 'some degree of independence".

The documents added: "The development will seek to provide residents' accommodation for older people in need of general frail residential or specialist dementia care, or potentially suffering disability or other health problems and in need of care and support, but for whom the choices available in the area are limited."

Richmond Council will make a decision on the application in due course.
